We had to go to Idaho Falls to have my eyes checked after my surgery and on the way we go by Dillon, Montana. I have looking on Craiglist and there was an ad for bummer lambs, the ad stated that they had 102 bummer lambs. Well me in my naive thinking thought well that is a misprint they must mean 10 or 12 bummer lambs. I called the lady and she told me she did in fact have over 100 bummer lambs for sale ranging in price from $5 to $20 dollars. I asked her a few questions and told her I would like two of them. After talking to a friend about them she decided she would like two of them also. So yesterday on the way back home, Dale and I stop at this place. Sheep, sheep, sheep everywhere, more sheep than I can imagine. Lambs everywhere! Now before I go any farther with this tale, the lady was very very nice and these lambs were taken care of. This was just a working sheep ranch. There were pens and pens of bottle babies. We got there at feeding time so I fed the babies I picked out and she banded their tales. I picked two girls. I also fed the babies I picked out for my friend and she banded their tales also. There was little lamb, little little lamb and he wobbled to his feet and looked at me. Well me being me had to pick him up and he put his head in my neck. He was dirty, we was born the day before. He was one of triplets and momma couldn't take of all three. I fed him and he didn't suck well. The lady told me it would be iffy if he would make it. I asked her how much for him and she told me if I wanted to take him home, he would be free. How can I turn that down. She banded his tail and boy parts and he just stared at me. My heart has been stolen and to think he will be butchered this fall. Am I really strong enough to do this? I hope to breed the two girls to my friend's ram so he will have to be meat. I gave him a bath when I got home and he is sucking on the bottle today. He ate 3 ounces this afternoon. I have fallen in love again.

So 3 lambs - 2 ewes and 1 wethered ram for $20. I am happy with this deal.

Please excuse my ignorance. Why do they band the tails? Don't worry I'm just curious not judgmental in any way. We hope to venture into raising a couple lambs next year.
I am not sure why people originally started banding or docking tails but I have to say the tail on a sheep is very gross. My best guess is because all the waste collects on the tail and it would be fly magnet. She docked the tail so it would be above that area when it falls off.
Have to add that I love your blog and looked for updates everyday. I would love to actually visit and see all of it in person, don't worry I won't end up on your doorstep, you are MILES from me LOL! Your blog is what finally pushed me over the edge to raise some meat chickens.
Your sister was wondering if after bottle feeding him if you could put him in the freezer.Or could MJ eat him, sorry you weren't raised like I was. that is just the way life was
