Busy, busy time...

It is spring time and it seems that there are more things to be done than daylight hours and in the evenings after dark I am trying to get my house work done but usually exhaustion hits me by then. The joy of spring; isn't it grand?

The garden is growing by leaps and bounds, the lettuce and onions are beautiful, the potatoes are up, the asparagus went to seed as this was only year one and I want to help it make a fantastic bed to come. The strawberries have more blooms everyday and this is only year two for the strawberry bed; hoping for some yummy berries. Last year I pick off the blooms like I was told to do so the plants could focus on getting established. My family was not thrilled about that. The beans are poking through the ground, I had one bean up with about all the rest ready to lift their faces. The squash has sprouted. The peppers are looking so much better after getting them in the ground. I so learned my lesson with the peppers and tomatoes this year and that is to not start them until the first of March next year. I will need somebody to remind me when I get the gardening bug in January. The beets and radishes are also up.

Today we are going to fence off another area for more garden; it will grow more tomatoes, corn, watermelon and whatever other seeds I find. I also need to get my cucumbers planted today. My peas didn't grow well and so I will just plant the cukes in that area and when they are big enough to choke out the peas, the peas will be done until fall anyway.

I want to share some pics of the tulip bed that grows behind the wood shed; it was here when we moved here but not like this and we do nothing to it all year. It takes no water except when God decided to water and it is an eye pleasing beautiful mess of tulips. This pics don't do this area justice as it stretches out quite large and the colors are out of this world.

The spring baby pullets are growing like crazy, I can't believe they are this big already. The have been out in the grow out pen for a week now and they are just getting huge. Here is a pic of them in their new outside pen, they have a roost in there but have decide they like this upper side wall better.

The pheasants and chickens eggs were suppose to go on lockdown today. Last night I decided to candle one last time and pull out the bad ones. I never could see through the pheasant eggs so I have no idea if they are any good or not. I could see through the chicken eggs easily enough, now four of the eggs in there are ones a mother hen was sitting one and left. This hen has been broody since February and finally gave up. I tried unsuccessfully several times to break her of it and couldn't and three days before her chicks were to hatch she left and didn't come back. So after candling I pulled the bad eggs and I always open them to see if they didn't develop at all or at what stage they stopped developing at. I took the eggs outside and I opened the first three and they were all unfertile. I cracked the last one and the yolk didn't run out like the others had, my heart kinda of skipped a beat because I knew I had messed up. I turned the egg over and there was a chick fully formed with toenails and everything. The yolk wasn't absorbed and there was blood. I made the split decision to pull the turner a day early and put them all on lockdown. I put this egg back in there laying on a wet washcloth and keep checking on him. The baby was alive last night and still alive this morning. I am hoping that I don't become the chicken killer through all this.

One last note of interest is our family planted a tamarack tree this year. Dale (hubby) has wanted one for several years and this year we found one for $10. We had went on a day trip to get boat parts and this tree came from Blanchard, Idaho which has a nice drive off the road. It was a great day!
