PLEASE LISTEN UP!!!! Today could have been a disaster around here, this is important. A simple mistake could have destroyed little and big chickie lives. Lives that I am responsible for and promised to take care of. I decided that Huey's temporary pen in the living room was starting to stink and needed to be changed. Thank God, it was a God thing I am sure, I decided to do it right then and there because I have been putting off everything else all day. I went to the chicken barn to get shavings and when I opened the door, "dust" poured out. I quickly realized the "dust" was not dust but SMOKE! I ran in and looked around. The Cornish X's heat lamp had fallen down. Mariah's 4-H chickens are in with them and the other chickies I hatched last week. I grabbed the cord and pulled it out of the wall. I then pulled the heat lamp up and it was ready to burst into flames. It was glowing red and it was a clear light bulb. The chickies were all fine. I grabbed them and threw them in Huey's container and while this was happening Huey comes flying in the door behind me with a cat on his heels. I called his name and he plopped down on my shoe. He went in the container with the chicks and they all went outside. I have read about fires from heat lamps but never thought it would happen here. PLEASE be aware that they do happen, check the lamp and the way it is hung everyday several times. This could have been devasting!
